چکیده

The problems under consideration are related to wave propagation in nonlinear dispersive media, characterised by higher-order nonlinear and higher-order dispersive effects. Particularly two problems — wave propagation in dilatant granular materials and wave propagation in shape-memory alloys — are studied. Model equations are KdVlike evolution equations in both cases. The types of solutions are determined and analysed. It has been found that waves in granular materials are composed by two concurrent ensembles of solitary waves and there exist a threshold parameter value governing the behaviour of stable waves in alloy type materials. © 2005 IMACS. The Significance of Fundamental Granular Materials Research to Space Exploration

Granular materials are ubiquitous on Earth and in space. Because condensed planets and their satellites are chiefly made up of solids, any mission landing on their surface must establish how to deal with the technological obstacles they present [1]. Sample return missions to distant objects require a strategy for extracting solids, and possibly processing them to liberate valuable components su...

Nonlinear transmission and spatiotemporal solitons in metamaterials with negative refraction.

We study one- and two-dimensional transmission of electromagnetic waves through a finite slab of a dielectric material with negative refraction. In the case when the dielectric slab possesses an intensitydependent nonlinear response, we observe the nonlinearity-induced wave transmission through an opaque slab accompanied by the generation of spatiotemporal solitons. We solve this problem numeri...

Origin of rigidity in dry granular solids.

Solids are distinguished from fluids by their ability to resist shear. In traditional solids, the resistance to shear is associated with the emergence of broken translational symmetry as exhibited by a nonuniform density pattern. In this work, we focus on the emergence of shear rigidity in a class of solids where this paradigm is challenged. Dry granular materials have no energetically or entro...

Al NMR / MRI Studies of the Transport of Granular

The NMR/MRI techniques are applicable to the studies of motion of granular solids, providing information on the velocities, effective diffusivities and correlation times of the moving particles. The studies of transport of granular solids reported to-date are based on the detection of the H NMR signal of the liquid phase of liquid-containing solid materials. Yet, the solid phase of many granula...

Nonlinear left-handed metamaterials

[1] We analyze nonlinear properties of microstructured materials with the negative refractive index, the so-called left-handed metamaterials. We demonstrate that the hysteresis-type dependence of the magnetic permeability on the field intensity allows changing the material properties from left to right handed and back. Using the finite difference time domain simulations, we study the wave refle...
